4 Types of Decorative Processes For Your Next Custom Book Project

How do you capture reader interest? That’s where decorative processes come into the picture.

Once your book’s manuscript is ready, that is only one part of its journey. The next step is to get it finished through finishing processes. As soon as that is taken care of, you must turn your attention towards another problem: how to capture reader interest. That’s where decorative processes come into the picture.

Embossing

Embossing is the technique of adding a raised image to the cover of a book. This doesn’t have to be a novel, either. It could be a nonfiction work, a commemorative project dedicated to a special occasion, or almost any other type of printed product. Any images that are stamped onto the cover without modification are also embossed, but in this case, the process is known as blind embossing. However, sometimes you won’t want to raise the image on the cover, but push it deeper into the cover instead. This process is called debossing instead.

Foil Stamping

Another technique you can experiment with is foil stamping. With foil stamping, you can make book and magazine cover jump out at readers when they walk by. Metallic foils can catch the light and draw the eye. These foils are usually applied to their covers by using hot die. Foil stamping and embossing can be used simultaneously in a process called foil embossing.

Coating

Printed materials, especially reading materials, can benefit from the coating. Coating takes the form of several different decorative processes. For instance, adding varnish will keep the project safe. It will also increase the gloss or matte look of the cover. Primers are used to help enhance ink transfer and make other coating techniques easier to apply. Barrier coatings can also protect the product against environmental damage caused by exposure to air, water, or chemicals.

Lamination

When it comes to decorative processes, you can’t go wrong with lamination. Lamination seals your product between sheets of sturdy plastic. If you are looking to redesign and update your restaurant menus, one way to give them an even more professional look is to laminate them.
